What is Dashain?
Dashain is the biggest festival in Nepal. It honours the goddess Durga and her victory over the demon Mahishasura. It begins with Ghatasthapana, when jamara (barley) is sown in a sacred vessel, and its main day is Vijaya Dashami, when elders give tika and jamara to younger relatives. Families travel home for it, and the days around Vijaya Dashami are public holidays.
Dashain dates by year
- Dashain 2082: 6 to 16 Asoj 2082 (22 Sep 2025 to 2 Oct 2025)
- Dashain 2083: 25 Asoj to 6 Kartik 2083 (11 to 23 Oct 2026)
Dates for further years are added when the Government of Nepal publishes each year’s holiday list. Trisambat does not guess festival dates.
