Nepal Sambat 1146: today's date and months

Today is 1146 Kaulā Gā 10 (Dashami) in Nepal Sambat (18 Kartik 2083, Wednesday BS).

Nepal Sambat 1147 begins on 24 Kartik 2083 BS (10 November 2026), the day of Mha Puja.

What is Nepal Sambat?

Nepal Sambat (NS) is the lunar calendar of Nepal. It began in 879 AD and, by tradition, is linked to Shankhadhar Sakhwa, a merchant of Kathmandu said to have paid off the debts of the people. It was the official calendar of the Malla period and is still used by the Newar community for festivals, rituals and family occasions. Today the Government of Nepal recognises it as a national calendar.

Its months follow the moon. Each month starts the day after a new moon and has a bright fortnight (thwa) and a dark fortnight (ga), and each day is named by its tithi. Because twelve lunar months are about eleven days shorter than a solar year, an extra month, Analā, is added roughly every three years so the calendar keeps step with the seasons.

The year begins on the first day of Kachhalā, the day after the new moon of Laxmi Puja, which is also the day of Mha Puja during Tihar.

Converting Nepal Sambat to BS and AD

Before the Nepal Sambat new year (in October or November), the NS year is the AD year minus 880. From the new year to 31 December it is the AD year minus 879.

Against Bikram Sambat, the NS year is the BS year minus 937 from 1 Baisakh until the NS new year, and the BS year minus 936 from the new year to the end of Chaitra.

Because NS months are lunar and BS months are solar, the day within the month never lines up. Use the converter or switch the calendar to Nepal Sambat to see the exact date.
