What is Tihar?
Tihar, also called Yamapanchak or Deepawali, is the five-day festival of lights. Crows, dogs and cows are honoured on the first days, homes are lit with lamps for the goddess Laxmi, Newar communities perform Mha Puja and celebrate the Nepal Sambat new year, and the festival ends with Bhai Tika, when sisters give tika and flower garlands to their brothers.
Tihar dates by year
- Tihar 2082: 3 to 6 Kartik 2082 (20 to 23 Oct 2025)
- Tihar 2083: 22 to 26 Kartik 2083 (8 to 12 Nov 2026)
Dates for further years are added when the Government of Nepal publishes each year’s holiday list. Trisambat does not guess festival dates.
